Allegany County Jail Roster
The official current-custody search for the Allegany County Detention Center is the Allegany County Sheriff's Office inmate search. It is free, does not require a login, and is meant for people held in the local detention center. The roster page title is "Search Inmates," and the form identifies itself as the Allegany County Sheriff's Office Detention Center search. Research inspected on June 16, 2026 found a live WebSmart form, a results list, and individual active inmate profiles.
The county roster is not a statewide prison search. It covers current Allegany County Detention Center custody: people booked after a local arrest, people held on bond or without bond, people serving a local sentence, and people waiting for transfer to another legal jurisdiction. The jail phone line, 301-729-8540, is the best direct confirmation path when spelling is uncertain, a release may have just occurred, or the online search returns no match.
The sheriff's public materials also point users to the Allegany County MD Sheriff's Office mobile app, which advertises an inmate list and inmate change-of-status notifications. The app is an official supplement to the website roster. It does not replace court records, state prison records, or federal custody locators.

The form itself is narrow, which makes the fallback chain important when the person is held under a different name, has just transferred, or is no longer in the county jail.
Use Allegany County Inmate Records
Start with the roster for a current county-jail search. Last name or nickname is required, and first name, sex, and race can narrow the result set. The roster does not publish a refresh rate or a release-retention period, so the absence of a name is not proof that the person was never booked.
- Open the official roster search rather than a saved results URL. The WebSmart result pages are session based.
- Enter a last name or nickname. Add the first name only if the common surname produces too many matches.
- Use sex and race only as filters. A wrong filter can hide a real match.
- Open the name link in the results list. The profile is where booking date, status, inmate number, charges, bond section, and any photo appear.
- If no match appears, call 301-729-8540, check Maryland Judiciary Case Search, and use the records-request route for older booking material.
For in-person help, the Allegany County Detention Center is at 14300 McMullen Highway, Cumberland, MD 21502. The main Sheriff's Office at 695 Kelly Road is a separate office, so call first before going to either location for records questions.
Allegany County Roster Fields
The official roster fields are more specific than many county jail searches. A blank search returned an error requiring Last Name or Nick Name, so users need at least one of those two identifiers. The results list then shows current inmates in sortable columns.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Yes, unless Nick Name is used | Maximum 30 characters. The blank-form error says Last Name or Nick Name must be provided. |
| First Name | Text | No | Maximum 30 characters. Useful for common last names. |
| Nick Name | Text | Yes, unless Last Name is used | Can be searched instead of the last name. |
| Sex | Dropdown | No | Options include all, unknown, female, and male. |
| Race | Dropdown | No | Options include all, unknown, American Indian/Alaskan, Hawaiian/Pacific Island, Asian, Black, and White. |
The results list observed in the research was headed "List of Inmates Currently Held." Columns included Name, Race, Sex, Birthdate, Booked, Inmate #, and Nick Name. Sort links appeared on each column, and sample booking dates used month/day/year format.
Allegany County Inmate Profile
An active profile is a booking record, not a final criminal history. The profile warning says the data provides arrest and booking information, may not reflect State's Attorney charging decisions, and may not reflect trial outcomes. It directs users to District Court records for final disposition. That warning matters because a person can be arrested, booked, and later have charges changed, dismissed, placed on stet, or resolved by plea or trial.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Notice | Roster disclaimer that booking data is not the final criminal record. |
| Mugshot | One front-facing booking photo was visible on the inspected active profile. |
| Name | Last, first format, with middle name if present. |
| DOB/Age | Full birth date and current age. |
| Inmate # | Numeric jail identifier used by the detention center. |
| Status | Active status appeared in red on the inspected profile. |
| Booking Date | Date and 24-hour booking time. |
| Held On Bond | A bond section exists, though the inspected sample did not show amount or type. |
| Charges | Charge or case text, including examples such as VOP and a District Court-style case number. |
The inspected profile did not show address, housing unit, projected release date, arresting agency, court date, bond amount, statute class, or multiple photo angles. Those gaps should be handled through the jail phone line, Case Search, or a Public Information Act request rather than guessed from the roster.
Allegany County Custody Systems
Allegany County has a dense detention map. The county jail, two state prisons, and a federal prison are all in or near Cumberland, but they are separate custody systems. A person arrested by a local agency often starts in the Allegany County Detention Center. A sentenced adult male state prisoner belongs in the Maryland DPSCS system. A federal sentence or federal custody history belongs in BOP. Immigration custody is searched through ICE ODLS when applicable.
| Custody Type | Where to Look | Local Facilities |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial, bond hold, local sentence | County jail roster and 301-729-8540 | Allegany County Detention Center |
| Sentenced state prisoner | Maryland DPSCS Incarcerated Individual Locator | Western Correctional Institution, North Branch Correctional Institution |
| Federal prisoner | BOP Inmate Locator | FCI Cumberland and satellite camp |
| Possible immigration custody | ICE Online Detainee Locator System | No dedicated Allegany ICE facility located in the research |
| Release or custody notifications | Maryland VINE and the sheriff app | Notification service, not a complete roster |

DPSCS states that its locator does not list every person in DPSCS custody and does not list people no longer in custody because of release, escape, or other reasons.
Allegany County Detention Facilities
Use the facility type before choosing a search tool. The Allegany County Detention Center is the primary local jail. Western Correctional Institution and North Branch Correctional Institution are maximum-security Maryland state prisons. FCI Cumberland is a federal prison with a minimum-security camp. None of those state or federal facilities is searched through the county jail roster.

Allegany County Booking Records
Allegany County does not publish a full booking manual, but the public roster shows what intake creates. A local arrest generally leads to transport, identification, search, property handling, medical and security screening, fingerprints, booking photo, and entry into the jail-management system. The roster then shows booking date and time, inmate number, active status, race, sex, DOB or age, booking charge text, and a bond section when applicable.
The official FAQ says people may be in the detention center because they are held on bond, held without bond, serving a court sentence, or waiting for transfer to another jurisdiction. That is why a roster match alone does not answer every release question. Bond, detainers, court holds, and transfer status can all affect whether a person can leave custody.
- Detainer
- A request by another authority to hold or notify before release.
- PR release
- Release on promise to return to court, often with conditions.
- VOP
- Violation of probation, a common charge or court-event shorthand.
- Disposition
- The final court outcome, such as dismissal, plea, conviction, or acquittal.
Allegany County PIA Records
When the online roster does not show the needed inmate record, Allegany County's documented Public Information Act channel is the fallback. The county accepts requests through the online Public Information Request form or by mail, email, fax, delivery service, or in person through the county attorney's office. A precise request should include the person's full name, booking date if known, inmate number if known, and the record type requested, such as a booking record or mugshot.
The county's Public Information Requests page says the first two hours are free. After that, actual hourly rates may be charged, along with photocopying, delivery, and other costs. The listed contact is Allegany County Government, Attention: Maddie Taylor, Legal Secretary, County Attorney's Office, 701 Kelly Road, Cumberland, MD 21502, phone 301-777-5823, email mtaylor@alleganygov.org, fax 301-724-6970.
Note: Use PIA for sheriff or county detention records, not to bypass a court seal, expungement, or protected court-file rule.
Allegany County Visit Rules
The county jail FAQ states that the Allegany County Detention Center has no in-person social visitation. All visitation is virtual and administered through PayTel. Visits scheduled on video equipment at the facility are free. Visits on personal equipment carry a fee. The county did not publish exact jail visit days or session lengths in the reviewed materials, so scheduling should be checked through PayTel and confirmed with the jail when timing matters.
| Facility | Visit Mode | Schedule Located | Rules and Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allegany County Detention Center | Virtual PayTel only | No exact schedule located | Facility video visits are free; personal device visits are fee-based; no in-person social visits. |
| Western Correctional Institution | Video and in-person | Detailed DPSCS schedule | Video by housing unit; in-person every other weekend; four visitors max. |
| North Branch Correctional Institution | In-person state prison visits | Friday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. by population | Register by 12:30 p.m.; visitors age 16 and older must be on the visiting list. |
| FCI Cumberland | BOP visiting procedures | Use official BOP visiting instructions | Must be approved on the inmate's visiting list; call before travel. |
Allegany County Jail Contact
People held at the county jail cannot receive incoming phone calls. They may use collect calling if the recipient accepts charges and sets up a vendor account, or they may use inmate funds for calls. Friends and family establish accounts online through PayTel. Technical phone problems go to PayTel at 1-800-729-8355.
Personal mail does not go directly to the Cumberland jail. It is sent to an off-site scanning center, searched and scanned, then made available to inmates on tablets. The county FAQ says no money, checks, packages, magazines, or newspapers are accepted through mail. The published format is Allegany Count Detention Center, inmate name and ID number, facility ID 5261, PO Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419.
Allegany County Inmate Funds
Funds for people in the Allegany County Detention Center are handled through JailATM online or a Jail ATM kiosk in the vestibule. The official FAQ says no funds of any type are accepted through mail. Money may be used for commissary, medical fees, phone use, and entertainment through tablets. Commissary items include clothing, hygiene items, stationery, and snacks, while indigent inmates receive certain facility-provided items.
Holiday gifts can be ordered through the county's listed JailCanteen channel at allegamd.jailcanteen.com. Before sending money, confirm the person is still active in the county jail roster or call 301-729-8540. A transfer to DPSCS, BOP, another county, or another legal jurisdiction changes the correct deposit system.
